A survey of Hacker News daily top-five stories found AI-related topics or likely AI-generated writing occupied a growing share of the site’s prominent links in 2026. Sampling every day in February found that AI filled four of five top spots on February 4 and 12, while February 5’s lineup was described as effectively all AI-related. The only February days without an LLM-related story in the top five were February 1, 9, and 25. The survey’s author used Pangram, an LLM-text detection service, to identify stories likely written with AI and manually reviewed the flagged results. The author considers Pangram conservative and says the review suggested some false negatives rather than false positives. One flagged example was the February 19 post “AI is not a coworker, it’s an exoskeleton,” which received more than 500 upvotes and more than 500 comments. A follow-up survey in June separated pure AI-focused links from stories with broader consequences that substantially involved AI. In the first half of June, roughly 60% of the daily Hacker News lineup was categorized as AI-related or AI-generated, declining to about 50% near the end of the month. That compares with approximately 40% in February.

Hacker News serves as a major aggregator for tech news and significantly drives traffic to various blogs. The platform has experienced an increase in AI-related content, reflecting ongoing tech trends since around 2018.
