Overview
Anthropic is struggling to secure sufficient cloud-computing capacity from Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly view the Claude developer as a competitor rather than solely a customer, according to an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal. The filing indicates Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, including agreements still under negotiation. The company is also leasing its own data centers and using third-party operators, while warning that those operators’ limited operating histories may make them less reliable than major cloud providers. Anthropic reported an $80.7 billion net loss and $16.3 billion in revenue during the first half of the year, according to the Journal. Two customers generated roughly one-fifth of that revenue. The filing also warns that liabilities arising from harmful AI behavior could exceed available insurance coverage. Anthropic told prospective investors last week that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, a 45% increase from the prior quarter, and it is reportedly targeting an initial public offering in November. Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
