CERN and Mistral sign a statement of intent to establish a strategic partnership

CERN and French AI company Mistral have signed a statement of intent for a long-term partnership to develop foundation models for scientific discovery, initially focused on high-energy physics. The partners plan to combine CERN’s fundamental-physics expertise, scientific data and large-scale computing with Mistral’s large-scale model-training capabilities. The central project is a pretrained Large Physics Model, described as the first foundation model for collider physics. It will train on billions of simulated proton-proton collisions from CERN’s Large Hadron Collider and is intended to support tasks including collision reconstruction, particle identification, detection of unexpected signals and assessment of future detector designs. CERN says current reconstruction workflows use chains of specialised algorithms that convert detector signals into objects used in physics analysis; a foundation model could learn across the full chain and serve multiple tasks. CERN has stored about one exabyte, or one million terabytes, of experimental LHC data to date. Collision volumes are expected to rise tenfold when the High-Luminosity LHC begins operating around 2030. CERN and Mistral say the collaboration could ultimately help develop AI methods for the wider scientific community and strengthen European scientific and technological capabilities.
