Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews'
news
4 min read
Proton CEO Andy Yen cancelled planned company-wide “re-interviews” in which employees would have been asked to explain how they use AI, following internal concerns and public reporting about the program. Six current employees and all-hands meeting audio indicated that workers feared the interviews could affect their employment if leadership judged their AI use insufficient. Yen acknowledged a “communication failure” during a roughly two-hour all-hands meeting, but said Proton would continue pushing AI adoption. He said leadership and the Proton board had reviewed the situation and concluded that the interviews had already served their purpose by prompting employees to discuss and learn about AI. Yen said an organizational reorganization would occur next month, including talent redistribution between teams, and stated that there would be no AI-related job losses. Employees gave mixed reactions. Some welcomed the cancellation, while others said AI-use measures would instead become part of performance reviews and argued that Proton’s direction had not changed. CTO Bart Butler said leadership had “fucked up” and that effective AI use did not mean abandoning security or sound engineering. Earlier internal messages quoted Yen urging engineers to use AI more and dismissing requests for time to penetration-test newly written code. Proton did not respond to a request for comment.
