PaperPilot – Zero-Cloud, Pure-Rust PDF Engine with WASM and MCP

PaperPilot is a Rust-based local PDF and document toolkit available as an MCP server, command-line interface, browser-based WebAssembly tool, Tauri desktop application, and local REST API. It supports PDF merging, splitting, rotation, page deletion and reordering, page extraction, booklet imposition, N-up grids, compression, text extraction, OCR, watermarking, signature validation or removal, PII scanning, deep sanitization, and Excel-to-JSON or CSV conversion. The MCP server connects through local standard input/output to Codex, Claude Code, Kimi Code, Pi, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients, allowing agents to execute PDF operations. The local REST gateway runs on localhost port 7823 and can be called from Python, Node, or n8n. Browser processing keeps files in browser memory rather than uploading them, while the project states that its tools make no cloud calls and require neither Chromium nor a C++ runtime. PaperPilot requires Rust 1.75 or later; desktop development also requires Node.js and pnpm. Its Apache 2.0 Community Edition includes the CLI, MCP server, REST gateway, WASM engine, and desktop app. Planned releases include PDF conversion to Markdown, HTML, JSON, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, followed by encryption, signing, redaction, forms, rendering, repair, comparison, PDF/A support, and Bates numbering. A separate Enterprise Edition is planned with SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, and DLP.
