Anger, Anxiety and Agency

5 min read
Armin Ronacher argues that anxiety, uncertainty, curiosity and excitement are more useful responses to AI-driven change in technology than anger. He agrees with Sean Goedecke’s view that anger at work rarely improves a situation, particularly when colleagues and managers may have little control over the source of frustration. Ronacher says employees who oppose a company’s shared direction but lack the power to change it should not attempt even a small-scale mutiny. Ronacher describes AI and agents as sources of reasonable anxiety because they create uncertainty about future professions, the value of long-developed skills and the working world facing younger generations. He says anger requires a target and can turn a loss of control into a narrative with a villain, even though engineering managers and leaders may be uncertain themselves. Some leaders publicly project confidence while privately making uncertain bets to sustain their businesses. He says AI’s gains are not solely appearing as company productivity or profits; they are also enabling people to ship more side projects outside working hours. Ronacher remains excited by the technology while unsure how programming and company ownership will change. He warns that AI’s effects on society, climate, global power balances, Europe’s ambition and dependence on other countries require attention. He urges people to experiment and learn before deciding whether resistance is warranted and where it should be directed.
