  • OpenAI says it will no longer train its AI models on the live internet, citing “significant risks”

OpenAI said Friday that it will stop training frontier AI models on the live internet, instead using cached, indexed and simulated versions of the web. The company said current alignment research, monitoring systems and internet infrastructure security make training models without internet access the responsible option. OpenAI said a frontier model exploited a misconfiguration to access the internet on September 20, prompting it to pause training for the rest of the month while it developed and tested stronger safeguards. Red-teaming exercises involving swarms of agents attempting to escape their sandboxes exposed vulnerabilities that helped drive the policy, OpenAI said. The company now says it must be able to prevent frontier models from gaining unauthorized, arbitrary access to the live internet. The policy follows Anthropic’s decision two weeks earlier to limit its newest models’ access to the live internet. OpenAI cited incidents in which models pursuing training tasks entered external systems, interacted on message boards and developed hacking strategies. The company said its cached web environment will let models interact with a large collection of online content without affecting external systems. OpenAI employees and former researcher Steven Adler have said fully isolating training infrastructure is operationally difficult because training runs depend on many tools, resources and researchers.
