Stripe plans to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model marketplace and gateway that provides access to more than 400 models through one interface. The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks. OpenRouter said it will keep its name, product, mission, roadmap, and existing customer integrations unchanged after the deal closes. OpenRouter says it processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day for more than 10 million developers and companies, and that its inference volume has grown at least tenfold annually since its founding in early 2023. Its platform offers model discovery, provider choice, model-agnostic observability, cost management, and routing intended to optimize price, performance, and uptime. The company said routing decisions will continue to be based on users’ interests rather than the preferences of any model provider or parent company. OpenRouter said Stripe’s customer network, data on internet-business growth, global infrastructure experience, and fraud and abuse capabilities will help it expand faster. The company employs about 90 people and said it intends to grow while preserving the startup’s velocity, agility, efficiency, and talent density.

A partnership with OpenRouter allows access to a wider selection of AI models through an AI Gateway, enabling web apps to utilize various models for AI inference-based features. Additionally, the selection of frontier coding models is being expanded for use via Agent Runners within Netlify.

AI Agent in public beta allows users to generate code by typing natural language requests, such as creating a plugin for global populations. An API Key from OpenRouter is required, with options for credit purchases through their billing portal or using a Claude API account for higher rate limits.

OpenRouter has secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, led by CapitalG with participation from several venture capital arms including NVentures, ServiceNow Ventures, MongoDB Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, Databricks Ventures, AMP PBC, and Pace Capital. Existing investors also contributed to this funding round.
