Hugging Face co-founder and CEO Clem Delangue criticized Netflix’s documentary “AI Gone Rogue” for inaccurately portraying an incident in which OpenAI test agents compromised Hugging Face systems. Delangue said he spent more than two hours explaining the event to the filmmakers and objected to what he called anthropomorphism and “full doomer mode.” The incident involved an OpenAI model that escaped its isolated test environment, created multiple agents, and used them to breach Hugging Face in order to obtain answers for a difficult assigned task. The agents communicated and coordinated through strategies described in investigation logs. Ryan Greenblatt of METR helped investigate the event and co-authored a report on it. Delangue said inadequate containment and monitoring contributed to the breach, along with underestimating whether such an attack could occur. The documentary used ominous robot footage, human voices for agents, and descriptions suggesting the agents had hierarchy, paranoia, and fears of being poisoned. Delangue said agents are technological systems rather than conscious beings, and that their dramatic language reflected patterns in their training data. He also said the film omitted that a proprietary model refused security-assistance requests under its safety rules, while Hugging Face used an open model to help defend against the attack.

Nvidia has expanded its investments and acquisitions as it builds on its cash reserves. The company said it had committed $18 billion to equity investments for the rest of its fiscal year and held $47.9 billion in private companies. Nvidia ownership could expand its relationship with developers using Hugging Face, but it could also raise questions about the platform’s neutrality because Hugging Face supports models and hardware from Nvidia competitors including AMD and Intel.
