Steam Users Beg for "No AI" Filter as Vibecoders Flood Next Fest

Steam Next Fest, Valve’s event for indie games and demos, has prompted calls from some Steam users for a filter that excludes titles disclosing AI-generated content. Users browsing the event reported seeing games promoted with imagery they believed was AI-generated and criticized what they described as low-effort or “vibe coded” submissions. Steam already requires developers to disclose AI-generated content, according to users requesting the filter, and Steam’s Discovery Queue currently helps surface games for players. Reddit user ScalesGhost asked for a Discovery Queue setting to filter out games containing AI-generated content and to exclude selected tags such as incremental games. Steam has an established tagging system, although Valve reduced the number of user-defined tags in May; an AI-content filter would require Valve to add AI as a tag. Other users said the volume of suspected AI-generated games had made Next Fest harder to browse and called for stricter submission rules. Valve has generally relied on Steam’s recommendation algorithms rather than extensive curation to elevate popular games and reduce visibility for low-effort submissions. AI use in game development is also expanding: Epic recently delayed an upcoming Star Wars shooter to pursue what it called an “AI-first” direction, while Capcom’s REX program reportedly uses AI to help improve the RE Engine.
