Deno’s team is joining Cloudflare, and the Deno runtime will wind down over the next year. Cloudflare will continue operating the JSR JavaScript registry on its infrastructure, while the team works to merge Deno’s celld technology into workerd, Cloudflare’s open-source runtime for Workers. Ryan Dahl announced the move two years after Deno 2 shipped; Bun joined Anthropic about 10 months earlier. Deno launched in 2020 with deny-by-default permissions, first-class TypeScript, web-standard server APIs, ES modules, a single executable and URL-based dependencies instead of npm packages and node_modules. It later added deps.ts, lock files, import maps and npm compatibility; Deno 2, released in October 2024, added full Node and npm compatibility. The source credits competing runtimes with accelerating Node additions including global fetch, WebSocket, Web Streams, Web Crypto, a stable permission model, type stripping, node:sqlite and require(esm). It also cites competition among package managers as contributing to deterministic lockfiles, workspaces, offline caches, smaller node_modules installations and changes to install-script defaults. GitHub announced in June that npm 12 would stop running install scripts by default after supply-chain worms. The source says a community Deno fork could test demand for an independent secure-by-default, standards-focused runtime.

OpenAI will restore a five-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus subscribers using Codex and ChatGPT Work on August 25. The limit returns after several weeks in which Plus users faced only a weekly usage cap across the two now-unified platforms. Users who reach either the five-hour or weekly limit can wait for the relevant usage cycle to reset or buy additional credits. OpenAI may also issue free limit resets, and users can bank resets through some promotions and referral offers. The company reset weekly usage early several times during the temporary change, including after the platforms added another million active users. Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s engineering lead for Codex and ChatGPT, said the five-hour cap helps smooth demand on the company’s compute capacity while preserving relatively generous weekly allowances. He also said Plus subscribers, whom he characterized as relatively casual and new users, can accidentally consume an entire week’s allowance and find the resulting restriction confusing. The five-hour limit will remain disabled for the coming months on the $100 and $200 Pro subscriptions. Sottiaux did not announce changes to Enterprise or Edu accounts, which use a separate credit-based usage system.

GitHub suffered a 7-hour, 47-minute outage on August 17 that disrupted github.com, authentication, GitHub Actions, APIs, pull requests, issues, and Copilot worldwide. GitHub said traffic had reached a new peak when a critical infrastructure component in its Central US data center failed to scale, creating capacity pressure that spread across its systems. Most services recovered that day after teams rerouted traffic and isolated affected infrastructure, while some Copilot services took longer because client-side retry loops increased traffic during recovery. The outage was GitHub’s second significant August incident, following an August 6 GitHub Actions failure. GitHub said neither event resulted from a code or configuration change; both were capacity failures. Monthly commits grew from 1.4 billion in April to 2.9 billion, increasing system demand. Since April, GitHub has added more than 3 million CPU cores, 120 petabytes of high-speed storage, and additional network capacity, while accelerating its migration to Azure. Azure now handles about 58% of GitHub platform load and half of Git operations, up from 12% of platform load in May. GitHub plans to limit retries and apply retry budgets and variable timeouts between services, review lower-priority CPU and memory alerts, isolate critical systems, and remove shared dependencies. It is also developing an architecture intended to scale read capacity linearly for large monorepos.

Stripe plans to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model marketplace and gateway that provides access to more than 400 models through one interface. The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks. OpenRouter said it will keep its name, product, mission, roadmap, and existing customer integrations unchanged after the deal closes. OpenRouter says it processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day for more than 10 million developers and companies, and that its inference volume has grown at least tenfold annually since its founding in early 2023. Its platform offers model discovery, provider choice, model-agnostic observability, cost management, and routing intended to optimize price, performance, and uptime. The company said routing decisions will continue to be based on users’ interests rather than the preferences of any model provider or parent company. OpenRouter said Stripe’s customer network, data on internet-business growth, global infrastructure experience, and fraud and abuse capabilities will help it expand faster. The company employs about 90 people and said it intends to grow while preserving the startup’s velocity, agility, efficiency, and talent density.
