No Need for Retirement When Utopia Is Around the Corner

Jim Nielsen compares the worldview of some AI labs to attitudes Daniel Ellsberg described among nuclear strategists at the RAND Corporation during the Cold War missile-gap era. In The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner, Ellsberg wrote that RAND colleagues saw their work as a transcendent mission, believed they possessed knowledge unavailable to officials and the public, and felt they were working to save the world from nuclear catastrophe. Ellsberg recalled that he and fellow RAND employee Alain Enthoven declined the organization’s generous retirement plan in their late twenties because they doubted the world would avoid nuclear holocaust long enough for them to collect benefits. Nielsen says the language of mission, exceptional knowledge, and imminent global stakes resembles rhetoric from AI companies including Anthropic. He also cites a report that AI researchers have begun smoking to signal a belief that AI will cure cancer before smoking’s health effects kill them. Nielsen speculates that an AI lab could discontinue employer-sponsored retirement benefits as a symbolic expression of employees’ faith that universal high income is imminent, while reducing corporate costs.
