AlpineBSD
AlpineBSD is a work-in-progress operating system that combines the NetBSD kernel, libc, and essential platform-specific tools with a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux. Its stated objective is to minimize the use of AI-generated software: no LLM-generated output is included in the base system or its main package repository under the project’s AI policy. AlpineBSD currently has no installer, although a high-level installation guide is available for manual installation. The system uses NetBSD’s kernel, whose hardware support is described as less comprehensive than Linux’s, so AlpineBSD may not run on arbitrary hardware, particularly some laptops. AlpineBSD includes apk-tools, the package manager associated with Alpine Linux, and BusyBox. Its userspace is somewhat more GNU-oriented than Alpine Linux’s, preferring GNU make over BSD make. AlpineBSD is not a fork of Alpine Linux; it maintains an original package collection, though many packages are ultimately based on Alpine’s aports. Alpine Linux uses OpenRC for initialization, while AlpineBSD currently uses s6 and plans to offer OpenRC as an alternative.
