Johns Hopkins alerts 3,000+ patients after data sent to AI tool
news
2 min read
Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is notifying about 3,182 patients that their protected health information may have been exposed after an employee uploaded a spreadsheet to a public AI tool that the hospital had not approved. The hospital discovered the issue on September 21, 2026, during an internal review, and said the information was improperly shared with the third-party platform. The spreadsheet covered patients admitted or treated from May through September 2026. It may have contained names, admission and treatment dates, medical-record and account numbers, treating departments, medications, and provider names. Johns Hopkins Bayview said Social Security numbers and financial account details were not included. The employee deleted the prompt, conversation thread, and document from the tool's history, while the hospital asked the AI company to delete the data and implemented measures intended to prevent similar disclosures. The medical center began mailing notification letters on October 22 and is offering affected patients 12 months of Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring. It is also retraining staff and tightening restrictions on unapproved applications and AI tools used with protected health information. Patients can contact the hospital's call center at 1-833-931-7766, using engagement number B174716.
The US orders every civilian agency to rip out DeepSeek, even tools built on it
news
4 min read
The Department of Homeland Security has ordered every federal civilian executive-branch agency to stop buying DeepSeek products and remove DeepSeek software, services and third-party products developed using DeepSeek implementations from their IT systems. Order 2026-01, signed by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and dated July 24, 2026, was publicly noticed for Federal Register publication on October 20 under docket DHS-2026-0628. The requirement excludes military, national-security and secure compartmented information systems. DHS said DeepSeek presents supply-chain, privacy and cybersecurity risks because its servers are in China, Chinese law can permit government cyber and intelligence access to private-company infrastructure, and its services may collect and digitally fingerprint users. The order also cites a February 2025 NowSecure audit that found critical flaws in DeepSeek’s iPhone app. DHS did not identify a confirmed case in which U.S. government data reached DeepSeek. Because DeepSeek releases open-weight models, the order can also cover outside vendors’ tools, though it does not name affected products or explain how it applies to DeepSeek models hosted on U.S. companies’ servers. Agencies seeking an exemption or delay must submit a written, compelling justification within 60 days; CISA will evaluate requests. Agencies must monitor network traffic, increase logging and strengthen controls against data exfiltration until removal is complete.
Postgres 19 delayed after AI reviewers find more bugs than humans can fix
news
1 min read
PostgreSQL 19 has been delayed until November after AI-assisted code reviewers identified more bugs than core developers could fix before the planned release. Core developers reverted as many as 10 features while preparing the release. Developers attributed the delay to improved review tooling rather than “vibe coding.” The findings prompted maintainers to remove or defer affected work instead of shipping the original feature set on schedule.
Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia
news
7 min read
OpenAI banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts that it said very likely originated in Russia and were used to promote the International Burke Institute, or IBI, a purported Israel-based expert community. The operators used VPNs to access ChatGPT because OpenAI does not permit model access from Russia. They prompted the service in Russian to produce mostly English-language posts and comments for X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Substack and Telegram, while instructing it to conceal linguistic signs of Russian authorship. OpenAI said the campaign used ChatGPT primarily for promotional social-media content, including replies to real Substack users that encouraged them to follow IBI. One operator also generated German-language Telegram posts criticizing Ukraine, the EU and the German government, while advocating closer relations with Russia. Another created logos for about a dozen country-focused Telegram channels and requested Russian-language summaries of their activity. IBI’s website, registered in February 2025, promoted a “sovereignty index” that portrayed Russia favorably and criticized Western countries. In a sample of 36 IBI articles published from September 2025 through May 2026, OpenAI found that 34 had been copied from elsewhere online, sometimes with false attribution. OpenAI assessed the operation’s direct social-media reach as limited, although its Telegram channels generally had 10,000 to 20,000 followers each.
AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: Study
research
2 min read
A study by David Stromberg of Stockholm University, Victor Lei, and Wu Yanhui of the University of Hong Kong tracked 27,000 Chinese students aged 12 to 18 and found a gap between AI-assisted homework performance and unaided exam results. About 80% of surveyed students reported using AI models including Doubao and DeepSeek, while the 20% who did not use AI served as a control group. Over six months, students using AI increased their average homework scores by 18% across subjects, according to figures reported by The Economist on August 18. Under exam conditions without AI access, those students scored 20% below classmates who had not used the tools during the period. The researchers’ full study had not been independently verified by other institutions at the time of publication. A 2024 University of Pennsylvania study found a similar pattern in math: students using ChatGPT or an AI tutoring program did better during practice but did not retain that advantage on a later closed-book test. A Brookings Institution tip sheet cautioned that AI can support learning when used intentionally, while overreliance that substitutes for thinking, social interaction, or creativity may hinder cognitive and social-skill development.
Mathematics in the age of AI
research
1 min read
“Mathematics in the age of AI” examines how the mathematical community might respond if artificial-intelligence tools become capable of research-level mathematical work. The essay treats the arrival of those capabilities as a hypothesis rather than debating whether or when they will emerge. The work shifts attention from AI capability to the goals and values of mathematical research. It uses mathematics’ problem-solving component as a case study for considering what researchers value beyond the production of solutions. The essay is based on a public lecture delivered at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians and was submitted to arXiv on August 17, 2026.
