Tooltips need a delay, and then they need to skip it

FrontPrep changed its company-logo tooltips to avoid opening during incidental cursor movement while keeping navigation among adjacent logos responsive. A logo tooltip now waits 200ms before opening, so cursors that pass across a trigger quickly do not display it. Leaving an open tooltip closes it immediately and starts a 300ms “warm” window. During that 300ms window, hovering another logo opens its tooltip instantly and skips the entrance animation. Each newly opened tooltip cancels the prior cooldown, keeping the page warm while users move between nearby triggers. When the cooldown expires, the page returns to a cold state and the next tooltip again requires the 200ms hover delay. The implementation shares warm-state data through a React provider, stores it in refs to avoid re-rendering every tooltip, and clears pending open timers when the cursor leaves before a tooltip opens. The implementation uses Radix and Motion in FrontPrep, with a simpler React example showing the timing logic. The author recommends 200ms as a balance: delays below 150ms can allow unintended cursor passes to open tooltips, while delays above 250ms can feel slow. A Claude skill is provided to audit tooltip timing across codebases, specifying a 200ms opening delay, 300ms warm window, and zero close delay.

Search results increasingly contain SEO-focused pages, duplicated answers and AI-generated material that can sound authoritative while misstating technical details, according to the author. Useful original sources may appear farther down results or be republished without their original context. The author attributes the trend to web incentives that reward visibility in ranking algorithms rather than accuracy, with generative AI making it cheap to create large volumes of plausible text that search systems struggle to distinguish from useful information. Several major search products now place AI-generated summaries directly in results, reducing the clicks needed to obtain an answer. The author argues that these summaries can conceal the provenance and reliability of underlying sources, leaving people who lack prior knowledge less able to identify errors. The author also contends that relying on generated answers can weaken research skills such as forming hypotheses, comparing sources and resolving disagreements between them. The same concern applies to using generative tools to bypass difficult drafting or idea generation, the author says. The author uses such tools for tasks including resume editing but distinguishes tools that extend a person's abilities from ones that replace cognitive work while retaining a sense of user control. Product optimization for engagement and convenience has reduced the friction that once prompted people to assess sources and develop their own conclusions, the author argues.

Kagi updated its Search and Assistant products on August 21, 2026, adding a redesigned Stocks widget, expanded Assistant search tools, and new retention controls for temporary chats. Kagi says the widget will appear more often in relevant searches. Search users can also enable a setting that automatically removes paywalled links from results. Kagi Assistant now renders links, Markdown, and LaTeX in user messages. Users can search across all conversation threads, sort results by recency or alphabetically, and use “/” to begin filtering by folder. Temporary Assistant threads can be retained for 24 hours, seven days, or 30 days. The update also includes bulk export of Assistant chats, controls for prompt submission behavior, expandable thinking sections, code-fence syntax highlighting, and protections intended to prevent search-engine indexing of shared Assistant threads. Additional fixes cover Search lenses, shortcuts, Quick Answer source handling, URL behavior, mobile navigation, web-search toggle persistence, speech-to-text pauses on Android, iOS login, and Kagi Translate extension and preset issues.
